What is a residual waste bin?

A residual waste bin is a wheelie bin specifically for residual waste. You can recognise it by its black lid.

Every business has residual waste. Residual waste is the waste you would normally throw in the bin. Think of tea bags, food leftovers or plastic packaging. If you have a lot of food leftovers or (plastic) packaging, it makes sense to get a separate container for swill (food leftovers) or PD (plastic) alongside your residual waste container.

As a business, you are required to separate your waste as much as possible. This is harder for smaller businesses, which usually have a residual waste container and one for paper and cardboard. If you produce more waste, you are expected to separate it more thoroughly. Waste that cannot be separated goes in the residual waste container.

What happens to residual waste

In the past, all residual waste ended up in landfill. Today, it is put to sustainable use. All residual waste goes to large, modern waste-to-energy plants, where it is incinerated. The enormous heat this produces is converted into energy in special turbines. Rijkswaterstaat uses the remaining ash to raise the level of roads.
