Did you have to dig a big hole in the garden to put in a trampoline? Or have you redone your garden or built a shed? Then chances are you have soil left over that you want to get rid of. A soil skip is the answer. Quick and easy to order online and delivered the next day. But when you go to order, you will see there are two options available: Clean Soil and Mixed Soil. Which one should you choose?
When you are laying a new garden, digging a pond or doing renovation work in the garden and around the house, you often end up with soil waste. This waste can be just loose soil, but it can also be soil mixed with rubble, pebbles, plants or turf. You might think soil is just soil, right? Yet there are different kinds of soil waste: clean soil that can be reused straight away, and mixed soil.
When you read ‘clean soil’, you might think the soil has to be spotless, with no contamination at all. That is not quite true. By clean soil, we mean soil that has been ‘declared clean’. This means the area the soil is being removed from is not known to be heavily contaminated. You do not need to request a clean soil declaration yourself. Before the skip is delivered, we carry out a postcode check. Soil, sand, earth, clay and short-cut turf can go in a clean soil skip. Please note: only a limited amount of turf is allowed in the clean soil skip.
Soil is not recycled, but reused directly elsewhere. Soil companies accept your ‘waste’ soil, check it for purity and put it to use at another location. So the turf and clay (lumps) in the soil are simply relocated along with it.
Do you have soil left over after a renovation or after excavating a building plot? This soil is often mixed with bits of rubble such as small stones, grit, pebbles or gravel. All of this can go in a mixed soil skip. Turf and remains of plants and roots can also go in this skip. So the soil in this skip can be a lot coarser and more varied than in a clean soil skip. However, a postcode check is also carried out for this waste skip before delivery.
As long as there is no soil contamination, soil can always be reused at another location. It does not need to go through a complicated recycling process, as plastic does, for example. Even so, processing the contents of a mixed soil skip is a little more complicated. Once the skip has been collected, the soil goes to a processing site where it is sieved. This removes all the contaminants, leaving only sand and soil to be reused.
