What is a swill bin?

An organic waste or swill bin is easy to recognise by its green colour. It is a wheelie bin made especially for organic waste from a professional kitchen.

Swill is very easy to recycle into new raw materials, so it is worth separating. A swill bin helps protect the environment and also saves you money, because collecting swill separately can cut your waste costs considerably.

What is a swill bin?

Benefits of a swill bin

Many businesses don't have a separate bin for swill. Yet a swill bin is very handy to have, and it comes with plenty of benefits.

Size

A swill bin is small: 120 litres. Swill is heavy, so a larger bin filled with organic waste would get too heavy. The lorry might then be unable to take the bin, or the bin could break when it is lifted mechanically.

Because the bin is smaller, it is emptied more often. This means fewer smells and fewer pests.

Exchange bin

A swill bin is not emptied but exchanged. If it were emptied, there is a good chance that food scraps would be left behind. These can rot, attract pests or get caked on.

Save money by separating swill

Swill is often thrown into the residual waste bin. This often seems cheaper, but usually isn't. A swill bin costs more than a residual waste bin, but collecting swill separately saves you a lot of other costs.

Less frequent emptying

If you throw swill in with the residual waste, the bin fills up faster. If you put the organic waste in a separate swill bin, the residual waste bin needs emptying less often.

Surcharge for excess weight

Organic waste is very heavy, and a swill bin is designed for that. If there is too much swill in another wheelie bin, you may be charged extra for excess weight.

Broken wheelie bin

Other bins are often not built for that much weight. If the bin is heavier than intended when the lorry comes to empty it, the rim the hydraulic arm lifts it by can break off, leaving the bin unusable.

Wasted trip

If a bin contains a different kind of waste than intended, the driver may not be able to take it. Sometimes a bin is so heavy from all the swill inside that the lorry can't lift it to empty it. That's one of the reasons a swill bin holds 120 litres. In both cases, you will be charged for a wasted trip.

Cleaning

A swill bin is exchanged, so you always get a clean wheelie bin back. This saves you time or the cost of cleaning the bin. Your residual waste bin also needs washing less often, as it no longer contains organic waste.
