Temporary storage versus a household clearance skip

The sun is blazing outside and there's sweat on your forehead. You're standing in the middle of your living room, surrounded by piles of books, old furniture and all sorts of other things you've collected over the years. The big question now is: where should all this stuff go? Do you opt for temporary storage because you want to go through it later? Or is it time to say goodbye for good and choose a household clearance skip?

What is a household clearance skip?

A household clearance skip is, essentially, a special container for collecting and removing household items. This includes things like old furniture and kitchenware, but also other (large) waste such as stones, wood and metal. Many people know this container better as a bulky waste skip.

Advantages:

  • Instant clear-out: Ideal if you want to see results straight away. Fill the container and then have it collected. You're rid of your clutter in one go.
  • Efficiency: Especially handy for a big clear-out or after a renovation. There's no need to sort things you're going to throw away anyway.

Disadvantages:

  • Permanent: Once it's thrown away, it's really gone. You can't decide later that you want something back.
  • Cost: There are costs involved in hiring a skip.

What does temporary storage involve?

Temporary storage lets you keep things you don't want to part with (yet) at another location. This can be handy when moving house, renovating, or simply when you need some extra space at home. Perhaps if you want to decluttering, but aren't ready to part with your belongings for good just yet.

Advantages:

  • Flexibility: You can always access your belongings and take them back whenever you like.
  • Saving space at home: You create more space in your home without having to part with your belongings for good.

Disadvantages:

  • Cost: There are monthly costs involved in renting storage space.
  • Less decisive: There's a risk you'll keep things for longer than necessary, which ends up costing more and doesn't really help you declutter.

Moving house or renovating

Are you about to move house or renovate your home? Then this is the perfect moment to go through your belongings thoroughly and decide what you really want to keep. All those old pieces of furniture, broken appliances and accumulated knick-knacks you know you no longer need can go straight into a household clearance skip. It helps you make a fresh start in your new or renovated home.

Big clear-out

Perhaps you've recently decided it's time for a big clear-out. The attic, shed or cellar is full of things you haven't touched in years. A household clearance skip is your best friend here. By clearing out rigorously and throwing away everything you no longer need straight away, you create space and order.

Environmental considerations

When throwing things away in a household clearance skip, it's good to know how they will be processed. The bulky waste skip is collected by the waste processor, sorted and then recycled as much as possible. In some cases, temporary storage can be a more sustainable option if you later decide to sell or donate some items. If you don't, though, it's better to offer them up as new raw materials.

Long-term costs

Although hiring a household clearance skip can cost more as a one-off, the costs of temporary storage add up over time, especially if you need the storage space for a longer period. It's important to factor these recurring costs into your budget.

Temporary move

Are you moving temporarily to a smaller home or abroad for a few months? Then it isn't always practical or possible to take all your belongings with you. Temporary storage offers a solution. Your belongings are kept safe and dry, and you can collect them as soon as you're back or move to a bigger home.

Sentimental value

Some items may hold special meaning for you, even if you don't use them very often. Think of heirlooms, old photo albums or treasured collections. If you're not ready to part with them but don't want to keep them at home either, temporary storage is a good compromise.

Tips for making the right choice

  1. Make a list: Before you decide, make a list of everything you want to store or throw away. This will give you a clear picture of how much you have and what kind of items they are.
  2. Think about the duration: How long do you expect to need the storage space? If it's only for a short period, the cost of temporary storage may well be justified. But if you want to store things indefinitely, the costs can quickly add up.
  3. Location: If you want to be able to get to your belongings in storage regularly, choose a storage location that's easy to reach.

Peace of mind

Whether you choose a household goods skip or temporary storage, both options have their own unique advantages. Consider your situation, needs and budget. Sometimes a combination of both is actually the best approach. Whatever you decide, make sure it helps you bring more space, calm and order into your life. Managing your belongings doesn't have to be stressful: with the right tools and a good plan, you can easily take back control.
