Tips for filling your waste skip efficiently

This is how not to do it!

A renovation often produces more waste than expected. Tricky! Suddenly that big skip seems a lot smaller. To make sure you can still fit as much waste as possible into the skip and carry away as little 'air' as possible, here are 5 useful tips for filling your waste skip efficiently.

When a skip is overloaded, it becomes unsafe (and illegal!) to transport it. The driver will therefore not collect the skip. To avoid being left with a skip that hasn't been taken away, it's wise to load it as efficiently as possible. How do you do that? Read on…

#1 Stack wood and laminate flooring flat in the skip

If you stand wood upright in the skip, it quickly takes up too much space. Where necessary, saw the pieces to size so they can be laid on the bottom of the skip and stacked across its width. That way you can fit in plenty of wood and laminate without losing much space!

#2 Take furniture apart and place flat pieces against the sides

Assembled furniture takes up a lot of space. So take it apart as much as possible and place the flat parts, such as tabletops and furniture panels, against the sides of the skip. This is also a handy way to raise the skip walls a little: by letting a flat panel stick out no more than 20 centimetres above the top of the skip, you extend the wall to the maximum height.

#3 Roll up carpet as tightly as possible

Carpet is often large, thick and stiff. To make sure your old flooring doesn't take up all the space in your skip, roll the carpet up as tightly as possible. Then tie the rolls and, if possible, lay them across the width of the skip. They also fit well against the sides of the skip. Just make sure the rolls don't stick out more than 20 cm above the skip.

#4 Put heavy items at the bottom of the skip

Just like with your shopping bag, it's handy to put the heavy items at the bottom of the skip. You can then easily fit lighter items into the remaining space, and it saves you from having to lug the heavy items around again if you need to rearrange things.

#5 Make it fun!

Try turning filling your builder's skip efficiently into a game. Who didn't grow up playing Tetris?
