Why ordering a waste skip in good time prevents renovation stress

What time will my skip arrive? This is one of the most frequently asked questions at our customer service, and we completely understand why. When you have a job planned, you want to know when you can start, and you don't want to be left waiting for your skip.

At ContainerOnline, if you order before 16.00, your skip is delivered the next working day. Even so, there are a few things to bear in mind when ordering a skip in good time. That's why we've put together five tips for a stress-free renovation.

#1 Order the skip one day earlier than you need it

‘Skips ordered today are usually delivered the next working day’, it says on our homepage. However, we strongly recommend ordering the skip one day earlier. That way, you can be sure you can start your job straight away on the date you want. On the delivery date, the skip is delivered between 07.00 in the morning and 18.00 in the evening. The driver's route is only planned on the day itself, so we can only see that morning what time your skip will be delivered. The driver takes the most efficient route. In the best case, you'll be first in line at 07.00, but your skip may also not arrive until late in the afternoon. Not ideal if you've got people ready to start work from 08.00 in the morning…

So if you're planning to start work on a Friday, order the skip for Thursday. The skip can stay on site free of rental charges for six weeks, so you can be sure you're able to get started early on Friday morning!

#2 Bear bank holidays in mind

Around bank holidays, we're often closed for one or two days. No skips are delivered on these days, so the schedules for the days before and after fill up much faster. Days off such as Easter, Ascension Day and Whitsun are often very popular for DIY jobs. Planning to use these days for a spot of DIY too? Then order in good time!

#3 Summer's day = DIY day

As soon as the spring sun starts shining, lots of people get to work on their gardens. So bear in mind that if you're planning a job because sunny weather is forecast, plenty of others will have the same idea. Summer is also always busier than autumn or winter when it comes to DIY. Many people use the summer months to renovate and refurbish. So don't wait until the last minute to order. Once you know when you want to start, reserve your skip in advance. The six weeks free of rental charges only start on the delivery date.

#4 Arrange your permit in good time

If the skip won't be placed on your own property but, for example, in a parking space, on the pavement or in the street, it's important to know whether you need a permit. It's best to check with your local council, as permit requirements differ from one council to another. In some areas, it's enough simply to notify the council that a skip is being placed, or you only need to ask for permission by phone. In others, you're required to apply for a permit, which can take up to two weeks (!). So start looking into the permit requirements in good time.

#5 Add comments

If you'd like a call when the driver is nearby, if the skip needs to go in a specially reserved spot, or if there's anything else the driver needs to bear in mind, it's best to let us know straight away when you place your order. You can do this by adding a comment in the comments field. That way, we can pass it on to the driver right away. If you only let us know on the delivery date, it isn't always possible to reach the driver. You can also use the comments field to let us know if you prefer a particular part of the day for delivery. We'll then do our best to take this into account.
