What do I need for a bathroom renovation?

Renovating your bathroom? You'll probably have lots of questions. To keep the job manageable, it helps to bear a few things in mind.

Choose a good contractor or do it yourself

Before the new bathroom can be fitted, the old one has to be ripped out. There are plenty of good contractors who can do this, but you can also choose to do it yourself. If you do, always make sure the water is turned off and the electricity is switched off, and use the right tools, including a good demolition hammer.

Stop rubble from spreading

If you're stripping out your bathroom yourself, always wear safety glasses to protect against flying debris. Also remember to cover pipes and drains. Special caps are available to stop rubble and dust from getting into the pipes.

Clearing out the bathroom

Once the demolition is done, the rubble from the bathroom needs to be removed. Here too, choose the right equipment to carry the waste out, such as a wheelbarrow. Protect the floors of any rooms you'll be carrying the rubble through, and choose a good waste skip. If you order before 16.00, the skip will usually be at your door the next working day.

Which skip do I need?

To clear out a bathroom, a construction and demolition waste skip is often ordered. It's the most popular skip for clearing out a bathroom, as it can take all the materials that come out of a bathroom demolition, including tiles, a bath, toilet, shower tray, washbasin, taps, mirrors, cabinets, ceilings, concrete, plaster, pipes etc.

  1. Order a waste skip (tip: have the skip delivered a day early so you can make an early start on the renovation. The skip can stay for 4 weeks free of rental charges)
  2. Strip out and clear the bathroom.
  3. Plaster and/or paint the ceiling
  4. Fit the bathroom furniture
  5. Tile the bathroom.
  6. Lay the floor
